The brief
Komodo's task for this project was to take the underlying concept around a word-association based revision service called ReviseOfact, and produce a Flash game to generate a viral effect and get students playing the game and signing up to the service.
The client had a very detailed idea as to what the game should be like, and wanted Komodo's consultancy regarding the best way to use the game to communicate the ethos of the brand, the advantages of the ReviseOfact service, and most of all, how to marry this to a fun game that would serve as a marketing vehicle to drive students to the site and generate sign-up.
A process was undertaken whereby the client's ideas were integrated into a game dynamic which puts playability, quick game times and fun first and foremost, whilst at the same time not compromising the underlying word-association mechanics which conceptually tie the game into the ReviseOfact service.
Komodo storyboarded the envisaged outcome and then art-directed the creative process, creating the in-game graphics and animations. At the same time, the development process began and the game came to life quickly and easily.
The game was put in context by creating a website which has the game taking place as the viewer looks out of a window, watching (and controlling!) RoF the Dog as he tries to catch the flying balls and quickly decide if they are associated or not. This concept was strengthened with the use of a rollerblind coming down as a backdrop for the initial screens, then opening up as the game starts.
The dynamics of the game join up the reflex-based, game-focused conventions of catching the balls, with the educational, revision-based conventions of word-assoication. The game ramps up the speed between each ball quickly, forcing the player to make the associations in less time with each throw. This adds to the educational effectiveness whilst at the same time, making the game more challenging and exciting.
The game integrates a data capture service and a 'send to a friend' functionality.
