The brief
Creation of a brand identity and supporting marketing collateral including printed and web based media for leadership development specialists Sampson Hall.
Sampson Hall specialise in leadership and management development. They are a partnership of two former Royal Marines commissioned officers with a broad range of leadership and management experience in a variety of sectors that include government, military, maritime, engineering and education.
Our job was to get across the experience, background, methods and approach of Sampson Hall and provide media solutions that help them communicate what makes their service proposition unique to their audience.
The brand needed to feel adventurous and challenging without being too ‘outdoorsy’, it needed to hint of the military heritage of the principles without this being overt or central to the brand.
We looked at a lot of other training companies finding that many presented in a standard, formulaic way that definitely wasn’t going to fit well with or effectively communicate the different approach that Sampson Hall take. This can be best summed in the words of the client:
“Sampson Hall inspire our customers through our own company ethos of positivism, courage, determination, unselfishness and a sense of humour in the face of adversity. In doing so, we will raise their expectation and develop practices and performance through the precise application of will.”
Looking at their competition - this is a very different approach.
It was this difference that we wanted to get across and so we looked at a wide range of graphical metaphors that we could use as a central theme for the brand and felt that a map pretty much summed up what they were looking to say:
Working with Sampson Hall is adventurous, challenging but rewarding and goal orientated
A journey in which they are leading [the client] to a destination of leadership excellence.
Along this route there will be obstacles that will need to be overcome
The logo links into this concept using a compass point as the motif and we created a vector map illustration that is included across all of the media to provide a strong visual reference that unifies the presentation of the company and reinforces the brand narrative.
The media tells a story and hints as what will be in store when the guys from Sampson Hall are called in to guide you to place called ‘leadership excellence’.
